Catawba County has two colleges: Lenoir-Rhyne College , a 113 year old liberal arts institution, and Catawba Valley Community College , a member of the NC Community College System. CVCC offers a variety of educational opportunities including one- and two-year vocational programs, a two-year college transfer program and continuing education programs.
Lenoir-Rhyne College was founded in 1891. This a co-educational, private liberal arts institution combines liberal arts with professional Rhyne offers a rich foundation in the arts, humanities, social sciences, language, religion, and natural sciences -- as well as the specific skills to live a purposeful life. Currently, 1,500 students attend the College with a Student/faculty ratio of 13:1. Seventy percent of Lenoir-Rhyne College faculty holds doctoral degrees. Eighty percent of those who apply are accepted to medical school. Eighty five who apply are accepted to law school. This College is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).

Catawba Valley Community College was established by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction on April 3, 1958 . The initial enrollment that year was seventy-seven students. A variety of vocational and technical education programs are available for a two year completion. The Programs are designed to give students the first two years of a four-year college education.
The campus covers 120 acres and includes ten buildings for a total of 270.000 square feet of floor space. The facilities consist of modern brick buildings, most of which are air conditioned. Included is a 42,000 volume library for the use of both students and public. The following programs are offered at Catawba Valley Community College : Criminal Justice, Engineering Technology, Environmental Life Science, Furniture Technology, Health & Physical Education, Health Science, Humanities, Industrial Technology, Mathematics, Science, Social/Behavioral Science, Tech Prep, and Special Programs.
